After a 36 hr overnight run we made Cuyler Harbor on San Miguel Island (northernmost in the Channel Islands). We did something that we NEVER do…enter a new anchorage at night. Luckily, all went well and there weren’t any lobster pots to foul our prop nor did we hit any rocks. Whew! It did blow all night as normal there. We could have done a little better anchoring in closer to shore to get more protection from the wind but we didn’t dare. So we got some sleep with the wind whistling over the decks. It was great to wake up in Cuyler Harbor. It had beautiful sandy beaches and would definitely be a place worthy of visiting again some day. We’ve traveled now 11,000 miles on this boat and had yet to see our own backyard! We departed at 7 a.m. and made Ventura Harbor at about 4 p.m. Tuesday night. Yeah!
Here we are full circle which began August 2008, 15 short months ago. Since then we were lucky enough to be Oregonians, Washingtonians, Canadians, Alaskans and finally back to being Californians. Funny thing about traveling by boat is that you almost become a local. When you are forced to ask strangers for directions, good places to eat, grocery stores , chandleries, and miscellaneous information you really get to know a place and It’s people. That’s the best thing for me about traveling. So as this chapter closes another opens.
Now the marathon begins. There are various boat projects, purchases and upgrades to be made to the boat in preparation for our next adventure. Our tentative plan is now leaving Ventura before the end of the year and celebrating the 2010 New Year in Mexico until we depart for ports beyond. As we ponder our cruising future the South Pacific is beginning to look better and better all the time. As luck would have it, Latitude 38 will be hosting seminars for what is called the Pacific Puddle Jump (3,000 miles across the Pacific) in Puerto Vallarta at the end of January. Sounds like a plan...that is if we can get affordable blue water insurance!
It is our hope we have lots of time to visit with all the friends and family we have in Ventura before we shove off again in a few short weeks. Cheers!
