Thermopyles

Definitely in Athens

lunch by the harbour

Sounio at sunset

After a short route of hairpins through the hills, we descended to the coast and followed good roads all the way to Athens.

We had spoken with Michael Y in Normandy about the battle of Thermopyles, so we stopped off there to see the memorial. 1000 Greeks held the narrow coastal strip against 1,700,000 Persians in 480 B.C. for three days before being defeated.

On to Athens in time for a wander around the city centre, a late lunch and a climb up the Acropolis in late afternoon sunshine. We have a day off here tomorrow to change oil and check over the car then relax.

Tuesday 2nd Nov

The Aston now has new oil and is well greased up for the final leg of the rally. We have eaten seafood lunch overlooking the boats at Mikrolimano and drove down to Sounio for an afternoon stroll around the Temple of Poseidon. A lovely coast road with very little traffic once we were out of Athens. We stayed there for sun down and have just got back, tired .... but what a lovely way to spend a rest day.
