Our exploring today took us to the tiny town of Elliston, Montana. Elliston is near the Continental Divide twenty-five miles west of Helena. It began as a trade town in a gold, quartz, and placer mining district. Later a lime quarry and a mill supported the economy of the town. Be sure to read the story in the picture added about the Frenchwoman's Road. It would make a great story for Halloween, it is quite scary. :-)

Elliston is located on the west side of MacDonald Pass which crosses the Continental Divide at an elevation of 6325 ft. Located just 18 miles west of Helena, the MacDonald Pass area offers camping at the Cromwell Dixon Campground, cross-country skiing, and hiking along the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail. We enjoyed driving the dirty narrow road to MacDonald Recreational area to view the awesome vistas from the top. The road is located in an open range for cows, we saw a ton of them, some right in the road we had to wait on. :-) After the recreational area, we drove across the awesome pass. Another great day of exploring in Montana. Check back later for more.
