Carpe boondocking at Banc Casino

US 95 in Nevada

Rest stop & driver change along US 95

Entering Tonopah

Mon, 08 Oct: We snuggled under our extra blanket all morning as the temperatures dropped to the low forties and, because we were boondocking, we did not run our furnace. We awoke when the first jet approached nearby Reno/Sparks Airport (right over our heads). We brewed a pot of tea, had breakfast, got Carpe ready to roll and drove five miles to the nearby Petro Truck Stop where they have a CB Radio Service Facility.

Our CB radio didn't seem to be working well so we had the expert check it out. He found everything in order, but did some tweaking and we're back on the air. It isn't great, but at least we can exchange info with the truckers and other RVers. Compared with 2 meter HAM radios it's pretty primitive, but truckers don't use 2 meter (at least not legally).

We left the truck stop at 0945 and continued east on I 80 to US 50 Alt. At Fernley we topped off our diesel which ensures that we have sufficient fuel to get us to the Sams Club in Bullhead City. At Fallon we connected with US 95, which we took southbound through Nevada's high desert.

US 95 is one lonely stretch of highway. It somewhat reminded us of some of the roads up north in Canada and Alaska. You could drive miles without seeing any sign of humanity other than the highway. The thought of breaking down along this stretch of road is not very pleasant. Fortunately, Carpe performed flawlessly and we just kept chugging along.

We broke for lunch at a turnout south of Schurz. We were still undecided as to where we'd spend the nite and finally decided to try a casino in Tonopah. We arrived at the Banc Casino and Restaurant at 1525 and got set up in their free RV & truck lot. We're on a nice level gravel area with plenty of room to open our slides and enjoy our RV. The only negative is the extremely poor Verizon service here, 1X signal which makes for marginal data.

Tomorrow we'll drive some 175 miles to the Escapee's Cooperative in Pahrump. We'll spend a few days there before heading to Laughlin for the weekend. Right now we're at 6,000' altitude and this'll probably be our last cool nite for a while as we head into the lower desert area which are still HOT!
