As well as seeing Mont Blanc from a distance there are a number of ways of experiencing the mountain range closer. Taking the cable car to L,Aiguille du Midi at 3,842m meant we would have to leave Daisy in the coach but it would have been a long day for her and it was too hot, even with the air con on. We decided instead to do the Tramway du Mont Blanc which meant Daisy could come with us. The tramway went from Le Fayet to Nid d’Aigle at 2,380m and up to the Bionnassay Glacier.
We eventually found the station for the tramway as it was not very well signed (typically French!) The construction of the tramway began in 1904 and the line reached Nid d’Aigle (Eagle’s Nest) in 1912. The original steam engines were replaced with electric ones in 1956.
The train jugged up the mountain, almost on the edge of the mountain, giving great views. At the top there was snow and of course Daisy had to have her usual roll, amusing a number of other visitors. Due to the snow we could not walk very far but enjoyed the views before catching the tram down to Bellevue at 1794m. From there we followed a good trail down the mountain to the next tramway stop at Col de Voza at 1653m before catching the tram down back to Le Fayet.
