We had a good drive from Rockport to Palacios yesterday. The weather was good & there was no wind. We were the last of our Sower group to arrive & some wanted to leave for a rodeo by 2:00 so the get-acquainted meeting was held as soon as we parked. It seems like a nice group of people to work with. We set up after the meeting! The sites are close together but have a great view of Tres Palacios Bay in front of us. We took Callie for a walking tour of the camp & it is unlike any camp we've seen - bayside on 2 sides of the camp, the buildings are painted coastal colors & 1 building's roof is painted like the Texas flag. We're looking forward to learning more about the history (over 100 years) of this camp. Still not sure what we'll be doing while we're here but hope to be a blessing.
Speaking of blessing - after church today we all drove out to Blessing, TX, to the historic Blessing Hotel for lunch. That was an experience! The food is in pots & pans on 2 antique stoves that have been made into steam tables & you just help yourself. It's all "home" cooking like we remember from our childhoods. There was fried chicken, turkey, roast beef, ham, green beans with potatoes, blackeyed peas, cooked greens, candied sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes & gravy, green salad, coleslaw, pickled beets, rolls that weighed about a pound each, etc., etc., etc. You sat at big tables covered with oil cloth & sat in mismatched wooden chairs. After we ate, we toured the hotel - which is now full with oil workers in need of affordable housing. The hotel rooms are $25/nite or $35 for a room with a private bath. It was something to see.
It's raining today & forecast 100% rain tomorrow. We could get 3" of rain in this storm. Guess we'll be working inside tomorrow.
