|Wednesday morning dawned bright and clear, good news for us as we were afraid the big storm with high winds would move in before we got out of town. It took a bit longer to break down as we've been sitting for just over a month here at Mom's. It seems like the longer you sit still, the more 'stuff' you get out and use. I used my 'new' pressure cooker a couple of times after Thanksgiving, trying to make good use of the leftovers. The ham made a wonderful pot of goodness with potatoes, carrots and onions all pressure cooked together. But I regress. I think I'm hungry!!
Our rig was packed to the gills as we put a bunch of Mom's stuff inside as well. Every year she makes the trip to Arizona, just outside the Nevada border, to sister Joyce's to spend the winter. Her oxygen concentrator & tanks, along with a season of clothing, computers, suitcases, food & of course, Mandy cat in her carrier, take up a lot of space! And, she always takes her vehicle as well. So Mom, Mandy & I traveled in her Buick and followed Larry pulling our 5'er. Traffic was light and the scenery was quite lovely today. Mandy never made a peep, she's such a good girl. All went well as we made our way down Hwy 318 where we made a turn onto Hwy 93. About 50 miles outside of Vegas we made the turn to Glendale, a cutoff of about 30 miles when heading toward Utah. We reached I-15 about dusk and headed north.
Unfortunately, we only made it about one mile. As we climbed the steep grade outside of Overton, black smoke started pouring out from under the 5'er. It turned out that it wasn't really the 5'er having an issue, it was the truck. We were able to safely limp our rig into a truck parking area where we decided to spend the night. Larry & Onyx stayed there to set up camp and I continued on to Joyce's with Mom & Mandy. We unloaded her totally packed vehicle and I took a few minutes to set her computer up for her before heading back the 40 miles to Larry & Onyx. Not exactly the end of the day we were expecting!
Anyway, enough information for you about that for this post.
Today, Saturday is our 27th wedding anniversary. We were supposed to be going out to dinner and to the Australian Bee Gee's concert in Las Vegas tonight, but since we are 'stranded' here, it is going to have to wait until one day next week. Mom is lending us her vehicle so we're going to a matinee movie in an hour or so and we'll figure out dinner plans later today. On the plus side, it's 64 degrees, sunny & beautiful. And we were able to move the 5'er to an RV park here in Mesquite so we have water and power! Life is good and we are blessed....
