This Verdin is a new bird for me...#431

Last one, the tiny baby at the feeder...

This update for all of our birding friends: When we arrived at our campsite in Las Vegas, we put out a couple of hummingbird feeders and two regular seed feeders. We were surprised at how fast the feeders were found. Vegas has turned into one of our best birding areas. We have two different kinds of hummers at the hummingbird feeder, plus we saw a tiny baby at the feeder, half eating, half sleeping. I went to take a closer look through the windshield and saw mama feeding two babies in the nest. Wow! This is the first time I have found a hummingbird nest. It is so exciting to watch mama feeding them all day long. The baby at the feeder went back to the nest and has stayed there, not sure if he is going back forth to the feeder to nest or if he just flew out the one time too soon and went back. I only have a few days left in Vegas and really hate moving the feeders and taking all that sugar away from the babies. I have spotted one more feeder in the area and hope mama knows about it too. The nest is up in the tree right in front of our RV, about 10 feet up in the tree.

I also spotted a new bird for my “life list" at the hummingbird feeder. It is a Verdin, a small bird with a yellow face. He comes to the feeders several times a day and feeds. He is number 431 on my birding list. This list includes birds from all the countries we have visited, not just the United States. I am a happy camper to have a new bird on the list and getting to watch a hummingbird nesting. I am adding the best pictures I could get of the tiny nest, it’s about the size of a walnut. Check back later for more birding updates.
