We spent 2 nights in Amarillo. We drove through miles and miles of Texas to get here - mostly huge fields with practically no trees.

The first night we did some grocery shopping. The next day, May 17, we drove to Palo Duro Canyon about 30 miles from Amarillo. It is the second largest canyon in the United States. The canyon is approximately 120 miles long and 600 to 800 feet deep. We drove through the park and stopped st several of the overlooks. The colors of the canyon walls are beautiful.

Charles Goodnight owned much of the canyon from 1876 to 1890. He was a former Texas Ranger and was a character mentioned in the novel "Lonesome Dove".
