Laissez les Bons Temps Rouler - Winter 2011 travel blog

Imagine a good sized mall. But instead of stores selling clothing or toys or electronics, every store in this mall sells furniture. Some stores feature different manufacturers; others vary by style. It took us two hours to assess the contemporary furniture, generally what we like. A few digressions in the other design categories and another hour went by.

Then we drove a few miles down the road to one of the largest malls we have ever seen. This too was all furniture over four stories. Many of these stores were outlets for specific manufacturers. Some were collections. In both malls sales personnel were courteous and helpful without that used car salesman approach we hate. They helped us figure out how we can go home and measure and get more information online and save the Illinois sales tax, which will more than make up for the shipping charges. We left with piles of brochures and websites galore.

At home we didn't see anything we liked all that much. Now we have seen much too much. The head spins. We're told that there are far fewer furniture stores here than there used to be. It's hard to imagine many more here. And tomorrow we are heading to High Point, the ultimate mecca of furniture shopping. The mind boggles.
