Nong Khiaw

On the way to the cave

Nong Khiaw is a sleepy little town that sits on the Nam Ou river. The 'posh’ accommodation was booked out by tour parties, but in any event, we preferred the laid-back Sunset Guesthouse with a communal balcony overlooking the landing point for boats coming up from Luang Prabang- apart from the unwelcome guest that had made our bedroom his home - THE most enormous spider. Alan failed to capture the beast which gave me a restless night.

The outskirts of the town have lovely walks (Alan walking in advance of me with a snake deterrent’ big stick0. We also visited some rather decrepid caves (Tham Pha Thok) that villagers took refuge in during the war, accessed by distinctly unsafe and broken bamboo ladders.
