Day 8 Pritchard to Mara - HAPPY CANADA DAY
DISTANCE TRAVELLED 100.2 km RUNNING TIME 4 hrs 26 mins AVERAGE SPEED 22.6kph DISTANCE PLANNED 101 TOTAL TIME 7hrs
Meagen started off the day ( at 7am) playing a CD with 16 different versions of Oh Canada! It was very evident as to why she got the CD free when she bought groceries - we were sure that none of the artists on the CD received any payment for their renditions..
Another hot sunny day - high of about 34 deg. Travelled along Hwy 1 (TC) about 30km through the Kamloops Valley , which is essentially an arid plateau between the two mountain ranges. Most of the farming is hay - again all watered regularly - huge sprinkler systems fed from the Thompson River. We soon enter more lush vegetation and the tourist area of the Shuswap lakes.
We stopped at Salmon Arm for the Canada Day celebrations - very small event on the lakeshore - also features the annual dragon boat races . Merv's (from Victoria) wife is in the race with a team of breast cancer survivors-they do well. Really nice family orientated Canada Day event - however we cannot stay around for the fireworks.
After Salmon Arm we head south on 97B & A , heading to Sicamous, since this route is not as hilly nor as busy on this holiday weekend as Hwy 1 along Shuswap Lake.
The highlight of the campsite at Mara was the beautiful pool - very refreshing after the hot day of cycling.
The number of flats has increased to about 4-5 per day - the hot weather, under inflated tires & lots of debris on the roads. Robert rode in the truck today - flu like symptoms - possibly just heat exhaustion..
