|Todays drive takes us down US 20, where we picked up I-5 South to Sacramento, before finally taking I-80 East into Reno, Nevada. It was a nice drive, although a bit depressing to see all of the damage done by the 7,000 acre Wye fire east of Clearlake Oaks in August. At the bottom of the hill we arrived In Williams where we made a brief stop at the Charter Family Fruit Stand. Larry wanted to pick up some fresh walnuts (they had been picked on Tuesday!) and after much debate I finally selected a jar of Spicy Greenbeans, Lemon Citrus Green Olives, Pickled Asparagus and finally Fresh Rhubarb spread. There were so many choices! Now that we've sampled all of the above I wish I'd tried at least five more varieties of the olives and a couple more of the fruit spreads. Great stuff!
We debated on taking US 20 all the way to I-80 but finally decided to skip the two lane windy drive for the faster, more economical I-5. It was ok, your typical interstate drive, which we always dislike. We prefer the more scenic routes. We picked up I-80 East and not many miles down the road later our GPS alerted us to an accident with a 25 minute delay. It recommended exiting the interstate & traveling a parallel road for several miles. We decided to try it & wow, it actually worked! We picked up the interstate about 15 minutes down the road and it was clear sailing the rest of the way.
We encountered snow along the side of the road just east of Donner Pass & of course there was plenty of it still around once we reached the rest area on the top of the Pass. It dropped the temperature quickly (it was 80 degrees in Sacramento) but made for a refreshing walk as we stretched our legs one last time before arriving in Reno. It was late enough in the day we ultimately decided to save the $$$ and dry camp in the Boomtown Casino parking lot. We joined several other rigs & truckers way in the back of the lot & there was plenty of space to put out two of our three slides for the evening. Several others were doing the same. By the way, there is a KOA campground located on this large property & we stayed there on our last visit in this area. But on that particular trip we stayed a couple of days to visit Lake Tahoe etc. Since we were pulling out early the following morning we decided to save the expense of the campground. We enjoyed a light meal in Cassidy's Cafe inside the casino & put a few bucks in the machines while catching the last couple of innings of the world series playing on the TV's scattered about. And the crowd roared!!! Yes they did. There was excitement in the air as SF wrapped it up for this year....So, that's it for now. More tomorrow:)
