The new cathedral

Colonial houses

Cuenca is the third largest city in Ecuador. The city has preserved much of its colonial air with many churches and old buildings. Most Ecuadoreans consider this their finest city with its cobblestone streets, flowering plazas and whitewashed buildings with old wooden doors. It was designated a world heritage site in 1999.

When we arrived it was the last day of the Corpus Christi festival, Septenario. After dinner we spent some time in the main plaza watching the band, the fireworks and the paper bags filled with candles that were released into the sky (wouldn`t want to have a wooden roof as they often come down as a ball of flames !!). There were also dozens of dessert sellers lining the streets which Monica and Caroline spent much time at !!!

The place we stayed at had a pool table and Nick, Simon and Patrick played while the girls read their books and watched tv.

The next day we had a look around the town. We started witht the new Cathedral (de la Inmaculada) which was supposed to be the biggest in south america, however the architect screwed up the foundations and the domes could not be built to the full size. We then walked down to the San Blas cathedral where there was a wedding in full swing. We watched for a while before heading down Gran Columbia to see some artesan shops and stopping for a lovely hot roll on the way ! We then ended up in the Heladeria Holanda for some great ice cream ! It started raining so we returned to the hotel for some pool !

There was a big footy game going on, Ecuador vs Argentina and as we walked to a restaurant we found a local bar showing the game. While everyone ordered Nick and Patrick watched the rest of the game (in a Colombian bar !!) to see Ecuador win 2 - 0 and move into 4th place for the world cup qualifiers. In the evening we played games in the common room, with a bit of wine.

Hotel Milan - $9 pp, nice rooms with cable tv. Good common room with pool table and nice breakfast. Bit noisy though !

Restaurant Eucalyptus - Nice place, but food a bit pricey.

La Vina - Good italian restaurant, top three spaghetti carbonara !
