on top of the train

the (un)impressive devils nose !

The Devils nose ride is an exhilarating tourist excursion, but it was once the country`s pride and joy and its construction was an internationally acclaimed acheivement.

The train was an old steam engine and we climbed on top for a ride on the roof as this was reccommended as having the best views. We took the train through some great countryside and the scenery was great. At many places there were kids running along side the train, waving and wanting lollypops thrown to them. Many of the passengers obliged much to the kids delight. We went through lots of indigenous villages and valleys stopping only a couple of times. It was a relaxing ride but maybe a bit long.

After 4 hours we stopped at Alausi to pick up more people to do the Devil`s nose. This part wasn`t actually as impressive as the rest of the journey, it was just a descent down the side of a mountain !

The train returned to Alausi where we took a bus on to Cuenca.
