We hope everyone had a wonderful Fourth of July. We were up early and got ready to drive to Ouray for the parade and wonderful festivities. We got about half way there and realized we forgot our lawn chairs. Yikes! We had to go back and get them because we knew we were going to be there all day. Once we got the chairs and drove back, they had blocked off the town, we were about 10 minutes too late. We had to wait for the parade to finish and then go into town, a bit of a bummer missing the parade, but we managed to have fun for the rest of the day. :-)
Ouray was the perfect place to be for cooler temperatures, the elevation is 7800 feet, while temperatures reach triple digits everywhere else, in Ouray, we were only in the 80's. We started our day with incredible blueberry pancakes at the Main Street Cafe with tons of coffee. Afterwards, we drove around town and visited the Elks Club, they had a Fourth of July rummage sale going on. The next event we wanted to attend was not until 2:00, so we decided to drive part of the million dollar highway over to Silverton and see what was happening there. The whole town was decked out for the Fourth, it was a sight to see.
The drive to Silverton and back was also incredible. I can see why they call it the "Million Dollar Highway". I will have to do a separate update on it, I took so many pictures, I know I am going to have a hard time deciding which ones to add.
We got back to Ouray just in time for the water fights. This was a first for us, it was so cool. Cool in more ways than one. We got sprayed with water and just managed to get out of the way of the huge firemen's hose just in time to keep from getting soaked. They have water fights spraying water for blocks. It was fun to watch, everyone was laughing as teams pummeled each other, drenching the huge crowd of onlookers in their efforts to win the day. This went on for quite a while, it was hilarious.
We had planned to stay for the fireworks until we heard the announcement the fireworks had to be canceled because of all the fire danger. Another bummer! We had really hoped to see the fireworks. Our new neighbor told us you could hear the fireworks repeat the booms at least ten to twelve times because of the huge mountains surrounding Ouray. I can only imagine how awesome that would have been. Maybe we will be here next year. :-)
Our last stop of the day was for awesome barbecue at Rib City. Jerry had ribs that he said were the best he ever tasted, I had smoked turkey that was incredible too. I will let the pictures tell the rest of the story. We hope you all had as much fun as we did.
Check back later for more from Colorado.
