We visited Ridgway State Park today, it is one of the most beautiful state parks we have seen. Ridgway Park is centered around a 1,000-surface-acre reservoir developed by the Bureau of Reclamation and run by the state of Colorado. Incredible mountain scenery mingles with magnificent campgrounds, some with full hook-ups.
They also have a beautiful swimming area with a white sandy beach with a five-mile long reservoir, beautiful picnic areas, and extensive walking trails, some right along the river. The Uncompahgre River flows below the reservoir. You can catch and release fish on the river or keep the fish caught on nearby ponds. We talked to several fishermen who said they caught some really nice trout.
Ridgway State Park is divided into several sections with different campgrounds and recreation. We visited the Dutch Charlie area today, it features two campgrounds. The Dakota Terraces Campground is on lower, open terrain by the lake and has electrical hookups. The Elk Ridge Campground is high above the lake in a pinyon-juniper forest. The views from Elk Ridge of the San Juan and Cimarron mountain ranges will make any camper happy.
It is also the one with the beautiful swimming area. We are already planning a picnic and swimming day or a day to just float in the beautiful blue water. I will let the pictures tell the rest of the story. Check back later for more, we will visit the rest of the parks next week.
