THE RECLINING BUDDHA

GOLDEN BUDDHA - WAT BENCHAMABOPHIT

WAT PHO

WAT TRAIMAT

Despite the title – a fascinating morning visiting 3 very different royal temple around central Bangkok – all with differing styles and influences.

Starting with Wat pho. This is the home of the massive reclining Buddha and the oldest temple in Bangkok. The reclining Buddha is all of 30 metres long – constructed of concrete but gilded in gold leaf.

Wat Traimat has a 5 ton Buddha if solid gold and we finished up with Wat Benchamabophit – which the then King (of “King and I “ renown) had built in a European style after travelling to Europe and bringing back Italian marble and architectural styles. Rather oddly the temple has a collection of grandfather clocks, but with cases made from lacquer and mother of pearl – a very Chinese style.

The afternoon we went out with Tony and Colleen and headed out on the sky rail to a shopping mall, before heading off to a late lunch at the Hard Rock Bangkok - so much has happened since we left England - I thought the one we saw in Singapore was the only one in the world !!!!!!

In the evening we went out to a Thai restaurant (great food) with traditional Thai dancing - very colorful and graceful.
