Countryside surrounding the gorge

Today was a long day as we spent the day exploring the Gorges du Verdon or the Grand Canyon of Verdon It took us nearly two hours driving to get to the start of the gorge but the gorge was just spectacular. We started by driving the south rim with many spectacular viewpoints and many hairpin bends and twisting narrow roads. We had views looking down into the canyon which in places was over 700m deep. We saw very few other cars – “only mad dogs and Englishmen” at this time of year.

We returned via the north rim again a narrow road with many hairpin bends but this time our road for part of it went down into the canyon. We discovered there was area where you could take a trail through the canyon but our it was getting late so that will definitely be on the list along with the Routes des Cretes road(closed November to March) if our travels allows us an opportunity to return.

Although it was a long day it was worth it.
