We have been busy beavers exploring this beautiful area of Colorado. Today we visited the tiny town of Hotchkiss, Colorado and Crawford, Colorado. Afterwards, we drove on to the Crawford State Park and enjoyed the beautiful view.
We had never even heard of Hotchkiss until our Direct TV man came and helped us fine tune our satellite signal so we could get our high definition channels back in. He was born and raised in the tiny mountain town of Hotchkiss. He told us about a fair going on in the area too, so we decided to make a special trip to see it all in one day, we were not disappointed.
It is a beautiful area to visit with some of the most incredible mountain scenery, it reminds us of Alaska so much in some areas, but the scenery can change in a flash, it goes from massive mountains to flat desert looking sagebrush. You never know what to expect and that makes it even more exciting. :-)
Crawford State Park is located north of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and about 30 miles west of Delta, Colorado.
The 734-acre park was established in 1974 on the shore of Crawford Reservoir, a 400 acre lake, with boat ramps and a swimming beach. They also have camp sites and a very nice picnic area. The park has 1.8 miles of trails available to both hikers and bicyclists.
Plant communities include pinyon-juniper woodlands, sagebrush and small areas of west slope grassland. Wetland and riparian areas are around the reservoir and below the dam. It is a perfect place for bird watching with all the plant varieties drawing the birds.
We visited two different parts of the park, the camping area was outstanding. (see photos) I will let the pictures tell the rest of the story. Check back later for more from Colorado.
