We started our German adventure visiting Vivian and Armando who we met back in Thailand. As they were at work they booked us onto a walking tour so we could learn a little about Cologne.

The tour started by the beautiful fort gate where we saw the Cologne coat of arms. The coat of arms has three crowns on the top half which represents the Three Wise Men whose bones are housed in the magnificent cathedral. The bottom half of the coat of arms has 11 tears representing 11 virgins that where given to Attila the hum during the encirclement of Cologne. The bones of the 11 virgins decorate a chamber in St Ursula church which we were intrigued to see. Turns out it was as weird as we expected.

We then visited the most understated Roman wall in a car park. The wall was found as the car park was being built so in true German style they built around it.

The cathedral which dominates the sky line is the tallest in the world with two spires. It took over 600 years to be completed and looks very dirty which is due to the brick which absorbs the pollution. We then visited a viewing platform which gave us a beautiful view looking over the river and the city. That evening Vivian and Armando took us for traditional German food and with a beer in hand which is legal in Germany we wondered around the various quarters that make up Cologne.

After the war the government was in a rush to rebuild the city so let people build various styled houses. This leads to buildings with lots of character neighbouring buildings with no character.

The following morning we had a stroll around the Botanical Gardens where for the first time this trip the colourful flowers filled the gardens. This was a beautiful end to Cologne apparently the most northern city of Italy.
