Since last Saturday when the Fremantle Dockers won their way into their first ever AFL grand final, I'd been pretty excited about being in Freo on grand final day. As we had no previous allegiance to either the Dockers or the Hawks, and given our geographical location, we firmly adopted the Dockers as our team for the occasion, hoping to see them win their maiden premiership.

We caught the free bus into town in the morning, killing an hour or so checking out some of the historical Freo markets. All the while the purple frenzy was building as supporters flocked into the pubs and big screens set up in town for the game. Outside the markets we even caught a ukelele band doing a pretty impressive job with the Freo team song.

Leaving the 'Cappuccino Strip' which had a distinctly raucous and alcohol-fuelled tone to it, we nestled our way into a spot in front of a big screen in the town square, one of the areas billed as family-friendly. The atmosphere was indeed good and we spent three hours watching as Freo tried valiantly but ultimately fell short of the prize. (Fortunately the town library was adjacent to the square so Will and Alice were able to spend half the game in there when their interest in the game waned!)

In the evening we drove back into town for a long-anticipated trip to a sushi train restaurant.
