Felucca on the Nile

Scenery along the Nile

Temple of Horus at Edfu

Today we started our epic felluca ride to Edfu. In the morning, we took a short sail across the Nile to Elephantine Island and Kitchner Island, where there was a big botanical garden. At 1pm, we returned to start our journey down the Nile to Edfu.

We booked a 3 day/2 night felluca trip down the Nile to Edfu, which is about 80-90km away. The fun started when we were moored at the dock for 2.5hrs before we even left. Then 3 additional passengers got smuggled onboard downstream after the police check. Hmmmm.... They were alright, but this made our boat a bit cramped at 11 passengers. By the time we actually started sailing on our first day, it was about 4:30pm. We stopped for the night at 6pm.

The next day, our 3 friends left us (yay), and we had a lot more room to move. We didn't actually start sailing till mid-morning, and shortly after lunch, were told by our captain that our trip ended the next day at Kim Ombo, about 50km shy of Edfu. Also, we were not going to visit the temples today as per our itineraries.

*Sigh*. So everyone whipped out their itineraries and the fun started. Of the 8 of us on the boat, we all had different itineraries!!! One fellow was sold a 3 day/2 night sail to Luxor, another was scheduled to be at a tiny island just across the river from Aswan, and the rest of us were supposed to be visiting temples in Kim Ombo today.

Welcome to Egypt.

All in all, it was completely frustrating as we all got kicked off in Kim Ombo the next morning after what was really 2 nights aboard the boat, and 3/4 of a day of actual sailing. The 17 of us (2 boats in all, 14 of us were from the same Abu Simbel tour) all bonded over this experience and we continue to have good laughs about it.
