Beautiful Ranch land

Miles and miles of pasture

Oh for cool

Too much of this white stuff though

This should be on a post card don't you think?

The chicken soup helped enough for Bill to want to do a couple of touristy things today. He is still not in great shape but at least he could lift his head off the pillow so away we went again. Our travel plans today was a drive along one of the many that New Mexico has to offer. This one was a circle of about 100 miles that included another National Landmark at about the ½ way mark.

Raton has signs pointing in three directions boasting that Albuquerque is 224 miles to the south, Denver is 224 miles to the north and Amarillo is 224 miles to the east. They don’t mention the west but I’m thinking it would be somewhere near Durango, Colorado if the road went direct. So we are close to lots of places but sorta in the middle of nowhere here. It is a beautiful area and one we had not had a lot of history of before.

We headed east toward Amarillo but only about 30 miles or so before we turned north and came to the Capulin Volcano National Monument. As many volcano’s that we have visited before, this one was most like the one in Maui at Haleakala National Park. The reason for that is that you can drive up the volcano and look down into the center of the creator. You can also hike down to the bottom if you choose. It wasn’t far but remembering that we would have to come back up kept us from taking this hike as well as the one around the rim. Maybe if Bill was feeling better and I was 10 years younger but this time we only took pictures. The drive to the top was only two miles but it was very steep and we were surprised to not find any guard rails. Believe me when I tell you that if you went over the side, it was a long way down.

Continuing on our little ride we drove through some really beautiful roads, canyons and mesas with some of the nicest ranches we have seen. They were huge. This is one of the areas that Ted Turner has so much property and I can see why. We drove roads that had cows roaming across the road and came upon herds of antelope, horses, cows and turkeys. We tried to find a spring fed waterfall but turned back when we saw our gas gage getting dangerously low and not a diesel pump in sight. We were up as high as 8300 feet and came across lots of snow along side of the road and then dropped down 1000 feet in no time. Interesting roads and the few humans we saw along the way all waved at us like we were long lost friends. It was pretty special.

Our plans were to have a picnic lunch by the waterfalls but as it turned out we had to get all the way back to Raton before we found a place to eat.

By this time Bill was starting to feel worse so we headed back to the RV and we are all snuggled in front of the fireplace. Looks like it will be another resting evening.

I am sneezing my head off too but in my case I think it is just allergies. We just can’t escape the spring blossoms. We have tulips blooming at our park right next to the dandelions and the blossoms are coming out on all the trees. AGAIN. I’m sure we will be following this for the next month. Remind us next time not to leave Florida until May will you?............ Later………………..
