Winter Motorhome Trip To Italy travel blog

Sisteron Citadel at Night

In The Morning

Horrible morning driving out through Lyon to Grenoble. Early morning traffic, odd SatNav directions, hundreds of red traffic lights all added up to make it a slow & painful trip. One good thing was the IKEA store on the outskirts of Lyon. We had stopped to fill up with diesel & spotted the offer of a croissant, orange juice & coffee for €1, an offer not to be missed. What we hadn't anticipated was the need to trek all around a labyrinth trail through every department to get to the restaurant. Then they had the nerve to charge 20 cents extra for a pat of butter, the cheek!

We finally made it to Grenoble & stopped at a Lidl store for bread & yogurts & had a quick sandwich lunch before heading South towards Cannes on the Cote d'Azur. The driving was far more pleasant & the roads were snow free as we made our way between snow capped mountains. We did see signs of the recent heavy snows in the area but nothing on the roads themselves.

We made Sisteron, our destination for the night, just as it was getting dark & parked up in the Aire beside the train station. Had to pay for the first time on an Aire, all of €4. The town is dominated by a medieval fortress on the top of the hill overlooking the town. By the time we had set up & walked up into the town it was dark & the fortress was all lit up by floodlights from below. Unfortunately we couldn't get right to the top as the fortress is closed until March. It was god exercise though after the hours of sitting.

For the first night we didn't have to put the heater on in the motorhome. The temperatures were quite high considering we were up in the mountains still.
