We spent yesterday exploring Varenna and Bellagio. On our first trip to Varenna 7 years ago we went to the castle high above Varenna. It was in pretty bad repair and the trek up was quite intense so we didn't go there the last time we came to Varenna. Much has changed at the castle since we were last there! They have spent money and time making paths, clearing brush and unearthing parts and pieces of the castle. They have a full falconry area, a ristorante and the paths are now well marked to get to and from town. It was well worth the hike up. We have some breathtaking pictures.
After that we walked to the cemetery to show J & L a typical Italian cemetery.
Our hotel came with a picnic lunch so we went to Villa Cipressi and had a picnic on the grass close to the boathouse. There was a wedding at the hotel, very beautiful!
The afternoon was spent shopping and walking around Bellagio. At least the girls did that, J&D sat at the bar closest to where the ferry and the motorcycles parked drinking beer and discussing Italian motorcycles, italian girls, italian boats, and italian girls...in that order!
Later that evening we were back in Varenna for the festival. I will post a blog specific to the festival later today. We are now off to Lake Lugano...a new adventure. Ciao, Maria
