We pulled into port in Honolulu early this morning and we disembarked about 9:30. We were met by our guide for the day, and we headed across the island enroute to the Polynesian Cultural Center. Before we got there, we stopped at a tropical macadamia nut farm. Wow! They had every flavor you could think of. We've discovered that we really like macadamia nuts! Once we arrived at the Polynesian Cultural Center, we grabbed a snack, then headed to New Zealand. The center is divided into the "islands" that make up Polynesia. So our first stop was New Zealand where we witnessed an example of a traditional wedding. Then, we headed to Tahiti were we saw students dressed in traditional dance costumes dancing just as they do in Tahiti. We watched a "water parade" where all of the Polynesia nations were represented. The best "island" of all to experience was Samoa. There was a man that climbed a coconut tree bare foot in about 10 seconds!
We finished up our visit at the center with the Ali Luau where we were treated to a bounty of all the traditional (and then some!) luau fare, including the roast pork. We tried the poi and other traditional luau foods. We just don't understand the existence of poi - there's no taste!
After the luau, we boarded our bus once more for transport to the airport. Our flight left about 10:30 p.m. and we tried our best to get some sleep during our 8 hour flight back to Houston. After arriving back in Lubbock later in the afternoon, we made it home finally about 5:00, exhausted, but so thrilled about our wonderful, beautiful Hawaiian adventure!
