|I didn't initially plan to visit Berastagi but after 3 tedious hours of getting dropped off at various (alleged) bus stops in the traffic gnarled streets of Medan I gave up. I reached the conclusion that either there was no bus stop to Tangkahan, which is where I wanted to go, or that not one person knew where it was but would pretend they did anyway. Either way I wasn't going to get there. So I decided on Berastagi. I spent the entire 2 hour journey here wedged on the back seat of the ludicrously hot and cramped mini bus. And to make matters worse the guy next to me fell asleep with his head on my shoulder. No matter how many times I pushed him away or elbowed him he would just fall back asleep and assume the position on my shoulder. So I was very happy to arrive in Berastagi and happier still that the climate is cooler here. The town centre was again chaotic and traffic gnarled but it is surrounded by huge green peaks. And I was lucky enough to have a hotel that looked out over the huge cabbage statue!
