We decided to check out the birding areas in Moab today. We found a long list of great birding places to visit, the one we chose was the Scott Matheson Preserve.

The Scott M. Matheson Wetlands Preserve is an oasis in the desert - a stark contrast to the surrounding redrock cliffs and arid desert. We chose this one because it is located right on the Colorado River.

There are more than 200 species of birds that have been seen in the preserve, including spring migrants: songbirds, shorebirds, waterfowl, summer nesters: yellow warblers, common yellowthroat, black-headed grosbeaks, lazuli buntings, song sparrows, great blue herons, fall migrants and winter waterfowl. You can also see beavers, muskrat, mule deer, northern leopard frog and raccoon.

We sat by the little creek running through the park and saw a lot of wrens and sparrows, they were moving too fast to photograph. I was wishing I had the Wishnie’s with me and their huge camera with the zoom lenses. I think one of the wrens would have been a new bird on my list, but I could not get a good enough picture to be sure, so I won’t add him until I do.

After watching the birds by the creek we walked the mile long path that loops around the park and had our picnic on one of the benches. After our picnic we met some locals that told us about a beautiful canyon in the area, we will be checking it out tomorrow. We are finding so much to see and do in this area and the weather has been beautiful. It was another great day in Utah, check back later for more.
