Right after lunch today we saw a cute animated cartoon about Ferdinand, a Spanish bull who would rather smell flowers than fight in bullfights. It is inspired by Munro Leaf's 1936 children's classic, “The Story of Ferdinand.” After Ferdinand is mistaken for a dangerous beast, he is captured and torn from his home. Determined to return to his family, he rallies a misfit team of other animals to escape and finally return to their home. He wants to bring others along with him on his quest to be who he wants to be and to let others do the same. That theme and the anti-bullfighting message are bolder than in the book.
Tonight volunteer Margaret Buschon showed some of the slides from the trip that she and her sister took to five countries in southern Africa last year. I enjoyed it. Their next big adventure will be in Switzerland.
