Left Sawai M. at 2:40 exactly(train originated there so it sat in station for 1 hour before leaving, ha! India). This time we had gotten seats assigned the day before and actually sat in them. Arr. here about 5pm and after determining that our next stop Udaipur can best be reached via bus which leave every 1-2 hours we proceeded to search for a place to stay...it turned out to be our longest search, went to 4 places before finding this one, the Chit Chat Guesthouse...very friendly, great food, and FAST internet!

Unfortunately, they operate with a provider which charges by the MB so even tho I can upload photos fast for the first time since China (one every 1-2 minutes), because of the MB involved it is costing an additional $1 US for every 4 pics! Bummer...I have uploaded another 20 + pics all at Siem Reap - Angkor Wat...Todd took tons and all of them are great but have to filter thru them to only put up the most representative.

Tomorrow we check out the Old City here and make reservations for bus onward...made reservations on bus for the 5th to Udaipur...then walked to the Old City - Pink City which was built by the Majaraja (king) over 150 years ago, a completely planned city...buildings all evenly placed, streets very wide, made to accomodate the people and commerce so the Majarajo could come and go without interupting business - in those days the people would have to cowtow to him and since his procession was huge it might take several hours to pass by. A fantastic scene, bazars of every kind...a twenty ring circus every day! We went to a textile'factory' and gem 'factory'...these consist of small rooms where peasants sit on the ground around looms and work on the fabric as much as 12 hours, school boys only after school - 3-4 hours. The gem 'factory' was just a place where they facet the stones and sell them...seemingly more for tourists than actual production. There are hundreds of these places but I think only a few families control all of them, not sure...anyway, we got suckered into buying some stuff!!

India is probably the only country where you will find every kind of domestic mammal on the streets...cows, pigs, goats, and yes monkeys freely roaming about living among traffic and noise and all the human stuff of the urban scene. After only a short time you take it all in stride and it becomes one huge comic epic all around you...rickshaws, auto rickshaws, taxis, buses, motorbikes, horse/camel/bull drawn carts, elephants as well! The second full day we went to the Amber Palace which will only do it justice with pictures...needless to say the place certainly reflected the opulance of the Majarajas of the time, they actually lived there up until 1954! Later we went to the City Palace in the Old City(Pink City), a trip thru a world of past riches too much to take in...the present Majaraja is still alive at 80, however, even with 4 wives he has failed to produce a male heir and the dynasty ends! The people don't like him anyway...when he dies the government takes over and the part of the palace where he lives will be open to see as well.

Mari had a Rajestani dress made for her folk dancing, Todd had a silk shirt made, I got a shirt, and both Mari & Bon got wool shawls plus some other stuff. I read the newspaper!

We love the people here, they are very open and friendly but very commercially oriented...once they know you are not going to feed them $$ their attitude changes unless you have done a lot of $$ business with them...chai(Indian masala tea) is a constant lubricant for business...I have to pee every half hour!
