Taganga, Colombia

Today we travelled by private bus from the hotel to Tayrona National Park. Once we had picked up our tickets we headed to the drop off point and walked through the forest to lookouts overlooking the Caribbean Sea beaches. The walk was quite hot as the day was sunny and about 35-36C in the morning. We walked through a number of different types of forest with great rock formations that had particular significance to the indigenous inhabitants in the area. On the way we came across 2 young indigenous children who had a little business selling coconuts – they had a long machete with which they opened the nut. Our guide told us they lived in a community in the forest. After three hours walking we reached a large open area where there were many tents and a restaurant under cover. We had lunch there and then, because the beach was crowded with backpackers, we walked back to the beach we passed on the way and had a swim in the sea. It was really pleasant by this time as the clouds had covered over and the day had cooled considerably. We all stayed there (there were about 15 of us) until the guides came back and picked us up and we walked back along the horse track back to the bus that was waiting for us to take us back to the hotel. The walk back up the track was interesting as many horses that brought supplies down to the beach places passed us on the way and we had to step aside all the time from the very narrow trails. After we arrived back, we had a shower then dinner at the hotel and to bed about 11:00pm.
