Another milestone—Carpe Diem logs lucky miles

Sun, 16 Aug: For once the wind is helping...

A very, very lazy morning. We slept in, reluctantly exiting our comfy bed well after 0800. We rarely allow ourselves the luxury of staying in bed on a travel day, but today's drive will be a short one and, heck, it feels pretty good!

Once up and about we got ourselves fed and Bob decided to dump our holding tanks and top up our fresh water while we are in a full-service site. We hope to spend time at the Rapid City Elks Lodge, which does have electricity but no water/sewer.

We eventually got going, a few minutes before half past ten. Bob pulled onto US 83 south. When we last traveled this road in 2010 it was so rough we couldn't drive at the speed limit. It is good to note that the road has been resurfaced and is now an excellent federal highway.

Just about two hours and 101 miles later we pulled into the Pierre South Dakota Wal*Mart parking lot and found a nice spot in the corner of the lot. A late lunch and then some shopping to replenish our fridge. We were pretty much out of fruit and veggies.

The heat spell "broke" during the nite and we awoke to temperatures in the low sixties. It is now in the mid seventies with a forecast overnite low in the fifties. This we can handle. It is still a tad too windy for our tastes, but when it blows on our tail as it did this morning we can handle it.

We expect to drive the final leg into Rapid City tomorrow. We hope there will be an available site at the Elks Lodge. If not, there is always "Plan B". Today's tailwind-augmented fuel economy was almost 9¼ mpg.
