Quilts for Children

This afternoon we enjoyed another armchair travelogue, this time with volunteer Janne Clinton speaking to us about her project to provide small quilts for children around the world. It was an interesting and inspiring talk.

Janne and her husband, Steve, are retired Methodist ministers and long-time CARE volunteers. Nine years ago Janne made her first quilt – a large one for their bed – was hooked on the craft. Since then she has made over 400 unique lap quilts for children around the world. She showed a few slides of those in poverty-stricken areas in Africa as they received their quilts, with huge smiles on their faces.

Normally, Janne doesn’t accept cash for her quilts; but today they were available for a donation of $25 or more. Half the proceeds will be donated to CARE and the other half will be applied to shipping charges for sending about 130 quilts to children in Puerto Rico who are still suffering from the effects of the last hurricane.

There was a drawing for a quilt of the winner’s choice. Lorraine, one of the day-care patients, won the drawing and she chose a quilt with bluebonnets and bright yellow trim. The yellow part perfectly matched what she was wearing!
