After a week here we've done a pretty good job of seeing what we wanted to see that was attainable by car. Since the weather continues to be picture perfect, it seemed a good day to do a real hike. We've been doing lots of short ones from parking lots and overlooks, but this was one where we would have to take knapsacks and hiking boots. The warnings about bears and panthers in the park did give us pause, but the largest mammal we saw was a deer.
The Window Trail lived up to the description in the guide book. We hiked down into a canyon and as the trail kept passing through rock openings we wondered if we were finally there, but a hiker coming the other direction assured us we were not and we would have no doubt when we got there. The notch in the rock opened up a vista to the desert beyond. It truly was a window to another world. Of course, the hike out of the canyon was harder than the hike in. When we got done we felt like we had really accomplished something.
