Trekking with Daisy 2009-10 travel blog

Today the schedule at church was much modified. There were the usual 9:15 traditional, contemporary and Spanish-language services. Then there was a reception in the courtyard, followed by an 11:00-o'clock special celebration of the twenty years that Pastor Rob and Kathy have been at First Evangelical Free Church. All the groups were combined for this event, including their orchestras. There was lots of music!

There were slides taken down through the years and some of the original members either spoke a few minutes or were otherwise recognized. There were also videos of remarks by several pastors of other churches in Austin. All the ministries of the church were highlighted.

The church was founded in 1923 when two rural Swedish churches joined together to form the Swedish Evangelical Free Church of Austin with 30 charter members. They used materials from their rural churches to build the first building. Services were held in Swedish until the late 1930s, when they decided to include the "Americans" in their fellowship. The name of the church was changed to First Evangelical Free Church in 1952. The congregation outgrew their facilities and decided to build a larger building. The first service at the present location was held on Palm Sunday 2002.
