Sat 31 May Day 2 75ks. Over 20k hill Ride time 5hr 30,

Rode over Khamba La pass. Steady climb from 3600m to 4794m over 20k. Sun blazing. Temperature 13degc first thing but soon warmed up to 30s. The climb was steady gearing at 1-2 or 1-3 with no flat ground. Multiple switchbacks. Views awesome , stopped every few kms for photos and to get our breath back, Nickie is feeling strong and powers ahead. The altitude hasn’t affected us like some of the others, as we get higher the views just get better and better. Coca Cola vendor on the hill, and a Yak nearby. About 100m from the top the van set up on the side of the road with hot juice, biscuits and banana. At the top, and viewpoint to lake, there are many cars, tour buses and people. Souvenirs for sale and you can pay to have your photo taken with a yak or a Tibetan Mastiff. Breathtaking view of Yamdrok Tso lake framed by huge mountains. Wind is blowing as we had been told it would be by our guide, cold, so we don jackets , gloves etc ready for the 8 km ride down to the lunch spot on the side of the road . Then enjoyable easy riding along the lake, about 45 ks , through small villages to camp. Sheep are spindly legged, not farmed for lamb shanks I think, but for wool. Brick makers in a field, using clay from the lake. Saw a stoat run across the road. Camp at a large flat area on a smaller lake . Many Tibetan mastiff puppies scamper through camp. Eraina’s birthday today . Cooks made her a huge cake. Nickie kept awake most of night by large vehicles on the road, dogs barking.
