DAY 6 MERRITT (Kamloops) Rest Day
Kamloops -an interesting City - the Tournament Capital of Canada (Junior Hockey, Curling, soccer, softball, fastball, rodeo). A very prosperous city with lots of new housing and commercial construction. It is located in a valley surrounded by mountains & hills - not in-line skating or casual biking friendly. Kamloops is an aboriginal name meaning the meeting of rivers - the North Thompson , coming from Jasper & the Rockies to the north and the South Thompson flowing from the Shuswap Lakes & the southern Rockies to the east, meet near the center of town and flow into the Thompson River flowing south into the Fraser. Tomorrow we will start to follow the South Thompson towards the Rockies- it will be our longest day at 147kms.
The pine beetle has been extremely destructive throughout BC in the last 2 years ( see dead trees in pic) - thousands of acres of pine trees have been cut.
Just 30 miles north of here is Sun Peaks - a great year round resort with great skiing - Gail & I were here last Feb visiting Rick & Anne, taking in the World Curling Championship and me skiing at Sun Peaks.
Rest day spent visiting, resting and some shopping (batteries, folding chair etc) . Brother Rick lives just east of Kamloops in Knutsford in a beautiful log house with acreage for the barn & horses & his greenhouse operation. (see pics)
