Lipari at night (a little blurry)

The trip to Lipari was again an adventure in and of itself. For one thing, all of the guidebooks claim that you can get to Lipari (an Aeolian Island off the northeast coast of Sicilia) by ferry from Messina (just north of Taormina). When actually IN Messina, however, it is a little more difficult. After asking several people (who all said the ticket office was about 300 km away, no matter how long I had walked since asking the last person), I gave up and asked a taxi driver, who told me that you can not get to Lipari from Messina- you have to go top Milazzo. When in Milazzo, it was easy to buy a ticket, but I had to figure out where it left from, then got off on the wrong island (Vulcano), before I finally made it.

It is beautiful, as well, however. My hotel is on the top of a cliff overlooking the sea (a good location, until you have to walk back up to it). The town (easily walkable in about 20 minutes) is full of activity- tons of places to eat, drink, shop, snack, and see. I tried another new thing today- grilled swordfish, a local favorite. It, too, was delicious.
