We visited the Salt River Canyon today, the drive took us along US-60, down 2000 feet into the awe-inspiring Salt River Canyon. We stopped at the Salt River Canyon Overlook and enjoyed the beauty of the rainbow of layered sediment, rocks and turbulent water below. We watched brave people playing in the water. I zoomed in with my camera so you can see how fast moving the water was.
With a cliff-hugging road and hairpin turns, the switchbacks down the Salt River Canyon is one of the most exciting portions of the drive. We were able to look back and see the roads where we just drove as well as the ones ahead yet to drive. We also stopped and took pictures at the Salt River Recreational area with more incredible views. Salt River is one of Arizona’s best scenic drives as it drops more than 9,000 feet over 50 miles ending at Theodore Roosevelt Lake.
Salt River Canyon is sometimes called the mini-Grand Canyon, and the views from the bridge where US-60 crosses over the roaring Salt River has been described as the most dramatic in Arizona. Our drive ended in the old mining towns of Globe where we stopped for lunch before heading back to Show Low. It was another awesome scenic drive in Arizona, check back later for more.
