We had a great time with Betty today. We drove about 200 miles on the White Mountain Scenic Drive. We stopped at the Sunrise Ski Resort and noticed the snow is not nearly as deep as it was last time. They still had a lot of people skiing and enjoying the slopes.
We also saw a HUGE snowman family, it looked like Mom had lost her upper body and head, but Pop and the kid were still in good shape. Pop even had skis on to go to the slopes. Jerry put one finishing touch on Pop so he could claim them for HIS work of art. :-)
We stopped for lunch in the mountain town of Greer, Arizona at the coolest restaurant. It was a treat just to read all the signs and see this unusual place. We had their Friday fish fry special and enjoyed it much, it was served with fried string beans. That was a first for all of us, but they were really good. Jerry and I are on Weight Watchers so we used our extra 49 points for this meal. it was worth every point. :-) After lunch we left Greer and continued on our scenic drive.
The White Mountain Scenic Drive starts just south of Pinetop-Lakeside in Hon-Dah, an Apache word for “welcome” or “be my guest”. The scenic drive took us through thick Ponderosa forest with with awesome mountain and lake views, we drove all the way to the city of Alpine, Arizona.
Alpine is located at an elevation of 8,050 feet above sea level in the eastern end of the White Mountains and surrounded by the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. Alpine is only six miles from the New Mexico border, so we drove across the border just to say we went to New Mexico today too. :-) We had a wonderful time, check back later for more from Arizona.
