This update covers our Harpers Corner Scenic Drive in Dinosaur National Monument Park. It is a 31-mile (one-way) auto tour route from the Canyon Visitor Center to Harpers Corner. The route goes by colorful Plug Hat Butte, which contains a beautiful trail and a picnic area. As the road continues to gain elevation, the scenery reflects the changing ecosystems. The last 12 miles include several striking viewpoints and overlooks, some as high as 2500 feet above the Green and Yampa rivers. Steamboat Rock hides the confluence of the two rivers from view at the Echo Park overlook. A one-mile (one-way) trail at the end of the route leads to a vista with views into Whirlpool, Lodore, and Yampa canyons. We didn't walk this trail because we are planning a special drive to view it later.
Fuel, food, water, and other services are not available along this route. We had lunch in Dinosaur before driving the tour, we also packed a lot of water and snacks just in case. This is a huge wilderness area, we only passed a few cars along the route. It was a “Wowser” drive. I hope my pictures do it justice, we had some drizzle along the way, please excuse the raindrops on the windshield.
It was also a “Wowser” day for wildlife, we saw elk, hundreds of antelope, a badger, chipmunks, deer and longhorn sheep. This is the first time we have spotted longhorns in a long time, we were very happy to see them. I am adding most of the photos without captions unless needed. This is a beautiful park and we enjoyed the drive much. Check back later for more, we are planning several visits back into the park.
