Our trip from Bryce Canyon to Kodachrome Basin State Park was a short 24 miles, a good bit of it coming down an 8% grade that portends things to come as we travel farther along Scenic Highway 12 to Capital Reef National Park. We stopped at the Grand Staircase Escalante Visitor Center in Cannonville, UT and got my passport stamped as well as gaining info on the area. We still arrived at the campground a little after noon and commenced to spending almost an hour trying to get the Mothership leveled. We finally managed it after using many boards under the front tires as well as the jacks. This has to be the most unlevel site we have been in. We are dry camping with no hookups or Verizon service but the view at the campground is astounding. The only problem with the dry camping is they only allow you to run the generators between 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. which means you have to manage your battery drains so that you can last 20 hours without recharging. It also makes preparing meals more difficult – good thing we like sandwiches. :)
Shortly after getting set up, we hiked the Nature Trail which goes back into some of the formations about a half-mile, with explanations of the different plants, shrubs and trees you see. It was a leisurely hike and the easiest we have done recently.
Friday we went on two hikes. The first was the Angel’s Palace Trail which winds through a canyon and then up on the mountain amongst many formations. It provided some tremendous views of the formations and surrounding area. I included a lot of pictures of this trail as there was something new around every corner.
We then hiked the Shakespeare Arch Trail after using Libby to transport us along a long gravel road to the trail head. It was getting late in the day by now and the heat proved to be almost too much for me. If there is one thing my body dislikes is getting hot during strenuous exercise that gets my heart racing. We did manage to finish the trail and see the arch though we didn’t take the much more strenuous route to the area behind the arch.
We did get back home in time to watch the Lady Gator softball team beat the Oregon Ducks in the first game of the super regional’s. If they can win one of two possible games tomorrow, they will be headed to Oklahoma City and the College World Series.
We had a great time here and the scenery is amazing. Tomorrow we head for Escalante, UT for two nights. Hopefully we will have Verizon there and I can get his posted.
