John & Sandra Expedition to OZ,NZ, Fiji Thailand & Singapore travel blog

Whenever you enjoy a Christmas day, you always look forward to the next – again and again. A day oN the water in Abel Tasman is a bit like that - we loved it before and we booked a combined kayak and track walk for today.

We met up with our guide and 6 others at Abel Tasman kayaks in Marahau . First a tractor ride taking our water taxi out to the sea, The water taxi took us up the park, passing Anchorage and BarkBay, before being dropped at Onetahuti beach to start our kayak .

We kayaked up the coast before heading out to Tonga Island. Great sea conditions for paddling. Around Tonga Island we spotted a number of seals, including seal cubs born just 3 months ago – quite cute really! The rocks around the island are also inhabited by large numbers of cormorants.

After going around Tonga Island we started to head across back to the bay. When we were most of the way back across we had a following wind so we were able to raft up the 5 kayaks and set up a sail to let the wind take us most of the way back in to Medlands Beach - our lunch stop.

After lunch a 2 hour hike, with the sea and inlets to our left all the way along the track. We walked up through the forest cover and the, by now, recognisable lancewood, rimu, manuka, kanuka and beech trees. The sound of tui and bell birds accompanied us along the track.

Arriving at Torrens bay, it was back on to the water taxi to take us back to Marahau.

Another special day in NZ (just in time too as a major rain front is heading through for the next 36 hours!) .
