We went to the city of Grand Island to attend the big Nebraska State Fair. There were lots of school groups attending today, on a very HOT DAY. They had great animal exhibits from the 4-H and other groups, judging of prize Goat Bucks, barns with huge Angus Steer and one immense long horn steer, working dogs contests, quilt exhibits with very creative patterns and scenes, carnival rides and games and last but not least – HUGE, expensive farm equipment. We had lunch at the Fair, each of us looking over all the vendors and all deciding on the BBQ beef sandwiches, yum!
We really enjoyed sitting in the bleachers watching the judging of the herding dogs. It was the “juvenile (or puppy) division” and some were easily distracted or had not learned to control their enthusiasm as they tried to make the cows go through the gates and pens as instructed by the dog’s owners. There was one really well trained pup that did everything that the owner called out. He ran when he was supposed to, stopped and crouched when commanded. The owner did a good job with him.
We have created a new tradition while here in Nebraska. We stopped at Dairy Queen for a Blizzard on our way home. Hope this does not become a habit, but it sure is good.
