The glacier as seen from the town

Upon leaving Mahinapua on the 27th we headed to The Bushman's Centre, known as probably the most politically incorrect place in the world. We got to see a short film about how the Kiwi's (as in New Zealanders, not the birds) used to catch deer so that they would stop destroying the native forest, this involved people jumping out of helicopters and tackling the deer or throwing nets down onto them. The deer were then transported to farms so that they could (obviously) be farmed for venison. We also got told about how possums are a pest and the 'only good possum is a dead possum' so if you see one on the road while driving, aim for it! They eat the Kiwi bird eggs and are a threat to a lot of the native bush and birds or New Zealand.

We got into Franz Josef around lunchtime and had a quick walk to a viewpoint where you could see the glacier edging its way through the mountains as well the rainforest. The rest of the day was spent relaxing in the hostel.

On the 28th most people headed out to do either the full day glacier hike, or the ice climb. Some people did the helihike instead. However, as my knees were still not recovered, and I was coming down with a cold I didn't do anything but relax at the hostel and in town, catching up with the boring parts of travelling like washing clothes and repacking my bag and throwing out anything that was not needed.
