How Shipshewana was started

Shipshewana is the 3rd largest Amish community in the United States with lots of shops and outlying farms, so there is a lot of activity with horses and buggies during the day. A letterboxer who is not Amish planted 15 letterboxes in various businesses in town and it was a great way to see many of the shops and enjoy the day. I didn't have to ask store managers or employees for most of them, but they all knew what I was doing, I bet!

Just before the main part of town is the Menno-Hof Visitor Center, built by the Amish. Volunteers and displays and multimedia presentations are used to relate the story of the Amish and Mennonites from their beginnings, persecutions, migrations, and customs. It is very nicely done and worth the hour or so it takes to see it all.

They have a very big flea market on Tuesday and Wednesdays. Dolores and Allan went there and claimed it to be the biggest they had ever seen. I decided to stay away on those days for various reasons. I can't buy "stuff" and I don't want a lot of people around the stores who might see me reach behind products on shelves to get boxes!

The Amish are known for good furniture and great food. I can't use their furniture and can't buy any for presents for my loved ones, so I ate my souvenirs! Yummy!
