At 6:15 a.m. we were on the road. It was a cool 48 degrees and sunny. We were hoping to see some wildlife along the Cassier by getting an early start and also avoid some of the traffic. The road continued to be paved with little shoulder, no center lines and some pot holes. Our early departure paid off as we saw 3 black bear, 7 sheep and one moose during our morning drive. We stopped to have lunch in the trailer at a turnout along the Tanzilla River and boy was the water moving fast. There was a caution tape near the shore warning people that the shore was eroding. There's nothing like lunch with a view!
We hit a 16 mile stretch of unpaved road with lots of pot holes just before Dease Lake. We drove very slow so we did not have any problems and it also allowed us to enjoy the scenery. The road got more interesting the further we went with 2 spots where the road had washed away a few days ago. They were busy rebuilding the road and there was only one lane available. It was a relief to pull into the campground around 4:00 p.m. We are staying at the Mountain Shadow RV Park and Campground in Iskut, BC. We are about 150 miles from Hyder which is our destination tomorrow. The campground has a beautiful view of a lake with the mountains surrounding it. We took a short hike around the lake to search for a moose. We did find hoof prints and a lot of mosquitoes found us. We have been enjoying being able to access the internet from the trailer.
All is not bad however as the views along the way were as spectacular as advertised. We got lucky because it was a sunny dry day. Today is the first sunny day in a week according to the campground owner. We understand the rest of the drive is much better. We will have to find someplace to clean the truck and trailer which are mud balls.
