Our mail didn't come in on Monday, so Tuesday we decided to make some side trips. Unfortunately, the museum in town which had been given glowing reviews by some fellow travelers was closed for renovation. We got a line on a great state park and drove up to see it. Wow! Were we impressed! It was created by volcanic ash millions of years ago and the rocks have been weathered by erosion into these fantastic shapes.

As you walk past the visitor center, this is what you see

. Every time you turn, you get a different perspective on the shapes

. There are campsites all among the rocks , but most of them would not work with an Airstream although we did see a few that we thought were level enough. There is an actual campground which does have water and electric for $14 a night. We've already decided that the next time we come this route, we're camping here.

Some of the wind erosion creates really different shapes in the rocks

You can also get a perspective on the size of some of these by looking a Madison and Suzanne

Imagine having a picnic table just under where Jeff is standing . Here's a closeup of that rock which looks like it would just drop right down on you given half a chance . The desert foliage adds to the weird and unusual looks and the really unique shapes . Some of them can even be turned into possible faces.

I didn't put all the pictures on the blog, but I was taking pictures almost every time I turned around because the slightest move would change your perspective. Truly a place not to be missed when anyone come through Deming, NM on I10.
