We left the Charlotte area around 9:00 yesterday morning - trying to beat the heat. We only had a couple of hour drive to Mebane. We're visiting friends in Whitsett, had planned to visit other friends in Hillsborough, & Mebane is between those towns. The Jones Station RV Park turned out to be a lovely, quiet rv park. The sites are long & widely spaced with trees between them. The owners have placed nice swing seats thruout the park. There are fire flies among the trees at night & we even saw a deer in the park this evening.
After we got set up, Callie walked, etc., we drove out to visit Steve & Judy Alcala. We worked with them at Hartland Christian Camp for a number of years. Judi & Judy worked in the office & David & Steve worked together in maintenance. They moved to North Carolina several years ago to be near a son & his family & now their other son & family are getting out of the Army & moving here also. Steve & Judy have a really nice place on 1-1/2 acres. Judy has her first garden this year & most of her plants are doing great. We enjoyed catching up with them & their family & sharing what we hear from Hartland. They took us out for NC BBQ for dinner & it was delicious.
Judy works for a company that does wraps for race cars, emergency vehicles, etc. This morning she took us on a tour of the shop. They were wrapping a Dodge truck like ours that came painted silver & they were wrapping it in matte black. We saw the huge printers that they print the wraps on & they also have printers that print on acrylic panels. They did all Joe Gibbs Racing car wraps & win banners until 3 years ago when Gibbs bought printers to do it in house. They do the wraps for Junior Motorsports & other NASCAR & Formula 1 race teams. They have 3 sales teams on staff - 2 salespeople & 1 artist/team. Then they have the production people, shipping & installers who travel around NC & neighboring states to apply wraps. It's an impressive operation.
We had planned to visit with Wayne & Sharon Hatfield this evening. We met Wayne & Sharon when we were involved with the Emmaus program in New Mexico & they were missionaries on the Navajo Reservation near Farmington, NM. We haven't been in touch in years but recently ran into Sharon on Facebook & discovered they're living in Hillsborough. Unfortunately, Wayne was hospitalized this morning & Sharon said in his present condition he wouldn't know us so the best thing we can do is continue to pray for them.
With our evening unexpectedly free, we invited Steve & Judy to visit us to see our trailer & the nice rv park in their area. David was going to make peach cobbler but the peaches in the store weren't ripe so he made a nectarine/blackberry cobbler - yum, yum! And Steve & Judy got to meet Callie. She fell in love with Steve & wouldn't leave him alone. Steve was a very good sport about it. It was a lovely evening to enjoy cobbler & ice cream outside & we were glad to have more time with Steve & Judy.
We've enjoyed our short time here in North Carolina. This is the first state so far on this trip that we would like to spend more time in (Blue Ridge Parkway, Outer Banks, etc.) but we've got to move on. Virginia here we come! More later...
